University and Location
The Technical University of Dresden (TU Dresden) has its roots in the Royal Saxon Technical School that was founded in 1828. Today it is a university that unites science and engineering with humanities, social sciences, and medicine. This wide range of subjects allows TU Dresden to offer a multidisciplinary learning environment and to contribute to the integration of science and society. The Excellence Initiative supports member institutions in cutting-edge research projects by funding activities in research and teaching that will enhance Germany’s overall performance in science and higher education. Located on the Elbe River in eastern Germany, Dresden is the capitol of the German state of Saxony and is near the borders of Poland and the Czech Republic. Berlin and Prague are within a 2-3 hour drive or train ride, and other European destinations are easily accessible by train. Dresden is a city with a rich, often tragic history, and is a cultural center with renowned theaters, museums, parks and architecture.
Language Requirements
Research is conducted in English, but some German language proficiency is useful for everyday life. German language classes are offered during the program.
The Arch Semester Away
Students who attend TU Dresden during the Semester Away of their junior year will have the opportunity to gain cutting-edge research experience in a wide range of scientific fields. Participants will work in state of the art laboratories under the guidance of leading TU Dresden faculty.
Program Dates
Program dates are flexible. Students may participate for a period of 4-12 weeks between May-August or October- January.
Application Procedures
This is a non-credit research opportunity and placement is competitive. Rensselaer may select one student for summer and one for fall. If there are no summer applicants, two places will be available for the fall semester. Final placement is based on the needs of the Dresden research faculty. Application requirements include a CV and letter of motivation naming the institute or chairperson with which/whom the student wishes to affiliated. A 3.0 GPA is required. Click on the

Accommodation and Meals
TU Dresden will assist students with the process of finding suitable housing in either a university or private apartment.
Estimated Expenses and Cost of Living
TU Dresden will provide students with a travel allowance of 300 Euros and a monthly allowance of 950 Euros (amounts subject to change) to cover living expenses. Students are responsible for a semester tuition fee of approximately 300 Euros.
