University and Location
Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is a leading Australian university, offering exceptional courses and research to over 40,000 students. Based in Brisbane, Queensland, QUT has a global outlook, including 6,800 international students from 100 countries. It is a university for the real world, with courses that are in high demand. Built around the Brisbane River, the city is a unique blend of the old and new. The inner city connects to the green, open suburbs. The weather's comfortable, and public transport makes it easy to get around. Brisbane is a safe and relaxed city. It is big enough to be interesting and always have something to do, and small enough to travel around easily and occasionally run into someone you've met before.

Available Fields of Study
QUT has an expansive list of academic offerings including Business, Creative Industries, Health & Community, Information Technology, Languages, Science, Mathematics, and Engineering (civil, computer and software systems, electrical, electrical and aerospace, mechatronics, mechanical, medical or process engineering).

Program Dates
Spring (Australian semester 1/summer & fall): February—June
Fall (Australian semester 2/winter & spring): July—November

Course Selection
Students should review the available QUT Course descriptions and semester timetable. When reviewing the timetable, keep in mind that the Australian fall semester begins in February, while the Australian spring term begins in July. You may also refer to the online Transfer Course Guide to see if any courses you are interested in taking have already been evaluated and approved. Keep in mind that course approval does not guarantee that the course will be offered during your semester abroad. You must check the timetable of your host institution.

Course Load
A full course load at the QUT is 96 credit points per academic year or 48 per semester. At QUT, most courses are worth 12 credit points, so students would typically be enrolled in four courses.

Grading and Academic Evaluation
Each course undertaken by a student at QUT is assessed using a variety of methods, usually culminating in the award of a single final mark. The University awards numeric grades on a 7-point scale which are used for the calculation of a grade point average (GPA). Students cannot receive credit for courses taken as pass/fail. Rensselaer students will only receive credit in courses where a grade of 4 or better is earned.

Accommodation and Meals
Brisbane offers a wide range of accommodation options, including homestay with an Australian family, shared living, independent living, limited on-campus accommodation. QUT’s accommodation service can help you find somewhere to live when you arrive in Brisbane. They can assist with information and advice on:
  • living in Brisbane (suburbs, transport, facilities) and setting up a home (furniture, appliances, internet)
  • searching for temporary and permanent accommodation
  • dealing with real estate agents and landlords
  • any tenancy related questions or issues that may arise.
Find out more about accommodation in Brisbane here.

Cost of Living
Brisbane is an affordable city but you still need to plan and budget carefully to make sure you have enough money for your living expenses. Personal expenses vary with individual students, however, it is estimated that you will typically need approximately A$18 000 a year to pay for accommodation, food, study materials, transport, entertainment and personal expenses. For more information on living costs, visit the QUT website.
